Meet Mrs. Melissa Shafter – Study Skills Teacher

We’re lucky to have Mrs. Melissa Shafter on the West Point team! She teaches Study Skills and is passionate about helping students grow into their best selves. Melissa loves seeing positive changes in her students—whether it’s a boost in confidence, improved habits, or a more optimistic outlook on life.

She became a Student Success Advocate because she wanted to inspire kids to be more positive, to believe in themselves, and to reach their full potential. Her favorite part of being a Warrior is the wonderful students she works with each day and the supportive staff she collaborates with.

And here’s a fun fact: when she’s not in the classroom, Melissa loves the thrill of zip lining—proving she’s just as adventurous as she is encouraging!

We’re thrilled to welcome Mrs. Rachel Urban to West Point Junior High! She’s teaching STEM Explorations, Robotics 1 & 2, and Robotics Technology for all grades, bringing energy, curiosity, and hands-on learning to the classroom.

Rachel loves teaching because kids are hilarious and fun, and every day brings something new. This is her first year at West Point, and she’s excited to work with junior high students again—it’s been a while, and she’s ready to jump back in.

Her inspiration to teach came from her own experiences in school, where a few great teachers helped her through tough times. Now, she’s committed to paying it forward and being that kind of positive influence for her students.

With a passion for problem-solving and creativity, Mrs. Urban is ready to help students build, innovate, and explore—both in robotics and in life. We’re lucky to have her on the Warrior team!

Meet Mr. Wesley Roach – Tech-Career Teacher

We’re proud to have Mr. Wesley Roach as part of the West Point team! He teaches Tech-Career to all grades and is passionate about helping students explore possibilities and discover new paths for their futures.

Wesley grew up surrounded by educators—most of his family members are teachers—so joining the profession felt like a natural step. He’s proud to continue the family business while contributing to West Point’s strong, supportive learning community.

When he’s not in the classroom, Wesley has a unique hobby: he restores and drives vintage cars—and they’re the only vehicles he owns! His craftsmanship and attention to detail show up both in his automotive work and in how he teaches.

We’re lucky to have Mr. Roach’s skill, creativity, and dedication inspiring students at WPJH!

Meet Mr. Zach Sparks – Technology & Engineering Teacher

We’re thrilled to have Mr. Zach Sparks on the West Point team! He teaches Technology and Engineering and enjoys every moment of working with our awesome students. His classroom is all about innovation, problem-solving, and preparing students with hands-on skills they can use in the real world.

Zach’s favorite part of being a Warrior is how welcoming and supportive everyone is—from staff and students to the wider school community. He says it’s the people who make WPJH such a great place to teach and learn.

Inspired by several teachers he had growing up, Zach chose to follow in their footsteps and make a difference in students’ lives.

And here’s a fun fact: Zach is a gardener and proudly grew corn in his backyard this summer—a harvest as rewarding as the success he sees in his students!

Warrior Hero Highlight We’re excited to spotlight Mrs. Carrie Stevenson, who teaches 7th Grade Math at West Point Junior High! Carrie is passionate about helping students not only understand new concepts, but also recognize the potential they often don’t see in themselves. She also loves that teaching allows her to keep learning and growing right alongside her students. One of her favorite parts of being a Warrior is the incredible school spirit and student talent. From assemblies, performances, and art shows to hallway decorating and school-wide Rock Paper Scissors tournaments, Carrie says WPJH is truly a fun, creative place to be—and she feels lucky to be part of it. Carrie was inspired by many amazing teachers throughout her life and now brings that same care and inspiration to her own classroom every day. And here’s some fun trivia: Carrie once went bungee jumping, hiked the entire Narrows in Zion National Park, loves chocolate-covered almonds, collects topaz crystals, and creates digital scrapbook pages on her phone. She’s a perfect mix of adventurous and artistic—and we’re lucky to have her at West Point! Returning for the 2025-26 School Year! Carrie Stevenson Math 7
We’re excited to have Ms. Amanda Steinhorst at West Point! She teaches Foundations of Visual Art and loves seeing the one-of-a-kind creations her students come up with. Fun fact: her dream pets include curly-haired rats, chickens, and a one-braincell cat!
